Yoga

As a longtime practitioner of yoga, i've been both horrified and dazzled to watch it go so mainstream. Upside: Its healing powers reaching millions. Downside: Rhinestone-studded yoga pants. Ok, actually sometimes those are cool too. Maybe there is no downside.

Health

I've always been into exploring the mind-body connection and the intersection of Western and alternative medicine. Then I got cancer and it became a little bit of an obsession. In a good way, I think. Here are some of my explorations.

Green

In the great Green Rush, I've been writing about everything from air-cleaning plants to a mini-guide on how to recycle everything.

Interviews

Lately I've been doing quite a few Q&A-style interviews--the lazy (or just really freaking busy) reporter's profile. It's been great getting to talk to everyone from Lou Reed to Alice Walker to Ellen Burstyn about their spiritual life.

Essays

Essays are pretty much my favorite thing to write and read. Here there's a story about how prayer helped with cancer, being a spiritually celibate twentysomething, surviving a close call on 9/11, my take on the 2003 NYC blackout, and more.

New York City

Born here, bred here, and back here, NYC is one of my deepest love-hate obsessions and touchstones. Here are some stories about it, from fluffy to tragic, just like home.

Profiles

A profile of United States Historical Society's founder, Bob Kline, a chat with the mind-blowing Nick Nolte, and a little something on professional clowns.

Real Estate

Most of these articles are from "Apartment Envy," a column that was on New York Today.com (of The New York Times)––it let me to do what every New Yorker craves: snoop around people's cool apartments.

New York Today's other real estate column, "Blueprints," did the same thing, but with buildings. Perfect for sating my life-long desire to explore the Chelsea Hotel...

Galleries

These are wifty little text-lite, "clicky" galleries I've written for Beliefnet.

F-F-F-F Fashion

While Content Manager of inshop.com, I conceived an online fashion magazine that included fashion how-to's, shoppers' horoscopes and a first-person shopping column.

As fashion editor of Fashion FACTS Folio, a trade newsletter for clients like Neiman Marcus and Joan Rivers, I wrote about accessories trends, attending fashion shows, shopping, scouting and reporting on tidbits such as Monica's bags, the sneaker-shoe phenom and Prada's mausoleum in SoHo.

Event Listings

I know it's weird to have these tiny blurb-ettes in a portfolio, but I was doing my best to dazzle in some of my first pieces for New York Today.com (of The New York Times). I wrote over 70 event previews for them, sampled below.

Unpublished Stuff

Thongs, the trial of Sherm Da Worm, teens getting tested for HIV--these are some things I wrote about for classes at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. I earned my master's degree there in May 2003.
