moo card gratitude

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

m. was asking me about these cool cards in yesterday’s list and I thought I’d share here. they’re business cards from moo.com. they let you upload up to 50 quotes or images to make into business cards. and the mini moo cards are also neat. on the other side is the usual business card info and you can play with colors, patterns, and layouts to your heart’s content (read: warning, major time-suck.) i used their eco stock and i’m super happy with the cards and moo’s customer service. sorry for the icky yellow lighting–ikea flourescent. to actually read the quotes you need to click on the image.

here i am again. this one’s a little intense–on 9/11, i appear for just a bit about halfway through.

weird september gratitude

Monday, September 21st, 2009

yeah susan miller, you called it. this is one weird-ass month. right? for so many reasons.

i, though, am grateful for:

1) the yoga teacher who actually introduced himself and asked about any injuries this morning. granted, s. and i were the youngest ones in the class by a good 30 years, but still, it was nice.

2) my continued obsession with frozen banana, unsweetened dagoba cocoa powder, a date, oat milk, and ice, blended.

3) that my proposal bebe has taken her first steps out in the world.

4) sarah maclachlan on the emmys. it must be nice to be a producer who can be like, “hey, yeah, for the memorial, let’s play that song, you know, the one by that chick that was played over and over around 9/11?” “oh, right, we should play that.” “or we can just ask her to sing it for us.” “yeah.” i still love that damn song.

5) the universe continuing to speak to me about certain things. i went to taylor mali’s book launch event thing at the bowery poetry club on 9/9/09 and he and his wife read this neruda poem to each other on stage: “I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz, /or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off. /I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, /in secret, between the shadow and the soul. /I love you as the plant that never blooms /but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers; /thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,/ risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body./ I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where./ I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;/ so I love you because I know no other way/ than this:  where I does not exist, nor you,/ so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,/ so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.”

6) my haircut from melissa soon, who rocks. it’s very odd how need-meeting it is to finally feel like someone understands what you want from your hair and have wanted for a very long time.

7) the waterbugs seeming to have gone elsewhere for the fall

8) j.’s students’ amazing peace rocks

9) finishing a 40-day practice

10) that even though i feel like making a bitch-list, a moan, whine, kvetch list, i am making this list instead. tho i will probably make the other, on paper, for me to find some day and be like, “damn i am always so negative in my journals.”

11) 101 cookbooks blog

12) deep exfoliation

13) that my big white pillows on my floor around my bed remind me of hounds made of marshmallows, like i am surrounded by big white friendly dogs every morning

sunday-night-full-of-happy-beef-and-emmy’s-gratitude

i am grateful for

1) the bluest suede blue sky, the platonic ideal of skyness. perfect

2) five loads of laundry

3) colorcoded clothes closets (soooo amazing)

4)  drunk with change and how it’s always here wiggling our molecules as we sort through papers and clothing. the plot is bigger, deeper, to change everything while we change the spot for the chip clips that aren’t in use.

5) that ladytime arrived on a weekend. love that it’s the opposite of the rain-on-a-weekend phenom. i get to be miserable in my house, which actually makes me happy.

6) that l. said i should wear more red

7) buying a new wallet. after, sigh, grr, losing and then not having the cabdriver return it. bad people. but cute new wallet.

8) jon stewart

9) the stick and bone shop on christopher

10) book 2 in the twighlight saga. she’s got me good.

11) trampolining! playlist suggestions? please????? funk bounce.

12) the first fall leaves

13) that claritin mostly works

14) accomplishing things

15) my sweet miele

16) drew

17) the notion that my friends who can do things that i can’t are helping me out somehow just by doing the things that they do–genius by osmosis? italian by osmosis, transitive creativity, contagious radical classiness.

sllllleeeeeeeeppp. luv u.

post-ecstatic-chant gratitude

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

so tired. so grateful, buzzy. i am grateful for:

1) a weekend of chanting, chanting, chanting at omega with all those unbelievably talented musicians–manose, daniel paul, mark gorman, etc. etc. in addition to the “big” names. so much fun.

2) j., for sharing all the fun with me, saving seats, eating meals, and processing the swirl.

3) toni bergins, the journey-dancing queen. so so grateful to get a chance to dance with her. and if you ever get a chance, she is simply the awesomest guide to letting your body and the music take you to a rich, deep, light, real place.

4) pink sequins

5) interviewing a really cool photographer tonight (alum of beloit) and getting to wade into his world and images. it reminds me of what i love about journalism–getting to catch a glimpse of other worlds, through other people’s eyes, for just a brief sec. oh and getting to see awesome apartments.

6) anandra

7) the notion of recovering from like-me, like-me-itis

8) kirku

9) having such a rich, fun summer of yantras and mantras

10) getting my milkshake fix with frozen bananas, trader joe’s chocolate syrup, and a splash of soymilk in a blender

11) being a slight kirtan groupie

12) my sweet tent

13) that moon. holy shit. did you see the moon?

14) that my bag currently has two books in it: rilke’s book of hours and twilight by stephanie meyers

15) walking into starbucks today while the toots & the maytals version of “take me home, coutry roads” was playing–at the exact part where the chorus goes: “hare krishna, dalai lama….”

16) omega–hammock, lake, fresh food, groundhogs, rabbits, the yoga studio with cork walls and bamboo floors, trees

17) jai uttal’s spontaneous lunchtime porch jam (video here)

18) getting to see the battle of the kirtan walla egos–who knew chanting hare rama could surface so much competitive testosterone? it was instructive though. these guys are so very human, relatable, and battling demons, etc.

19) rilke, rilke, rilke
